<image:caption>Plate and text by Suzanne Greene Miriam is described in the Hebrew Bible as the daughter of Amram and Yocheved, and the sister of Moses and Aaron. She was a prophetess and first appears in the Book of Exodus. She is the first woman to be called a prophet in the Bible. Unlike most women in the Bible, Miriam is never called wife or mother. Nature also honors Miriam. At her triumphal entry, the living waters of the Red Sea surrounded her (Exodus 15:19-20); at her demise the wells in the desert dry up.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Dinner Party - Michal</image:title>
<image:caption>Plate and text by Naomi Borrebach My plate is for the Biblical figure, Michal. The colors represent the characters of her story. Red represents stubbornness and represents Michal. Blue is for David, her husband. Gold is for her father, Saul, the king. And the flashes of silver are for her sister, Merav. Red also symbolized menstruation, as Michal was known to not have any children. “Michal loves David” is one of the few sentences in the Bible in which a woman is a subject — the subject of the sentence and the subject of her own romance. Finally, the black spiral represents tefillin. Michal wore tefillin every day, in defiance of typical gender roles.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Dinner Party - Doña Gracia Nasi</image:title>
<image:caption>Plate and text by Deanna Goldner Gracia Nasi was born in Portugal as a New Christian, as a result of the mass conversion of Portuguese Jews in 1497. Her family secretly retained their ties to Judaism. She married another converso, who was a wealthy trader. He died young and she inherited his enormous fortune. When the Inquisition was re-established in Portugal, she fled to Antwerp. She created a secret network, enabling Hewish conversos to leave Portugal, transferring their money so they could make new lives elsewhere. With her business acumen, she forged connection to rulers throughout the Western world. She relocated to Italy where it was more hospitable to Jews and continued to her crypto-Jews leave Portugal. In addition, she contributed to the printing of Hebrew books in Spanish for the benefit of conversos. She later moved to Turkey in order to keep the family safe from the intensifying Inquisition. Gracia became the leading force in the Jewish community. She lavishly supported synagogues, schools, and hospitals all over the Ottoman Empire. Doña Gracia sought to acquire some place of safety for other Jews. She leased land in Tiberius, then under Ottoman control. For a short time, Jewish settlement in the Galilee was increased and Tiberius became a successful city. By the time she died, she had achieved power, fame, and riches beyond most people’s imagination.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Plate by Phoebe Ana Rabinowitsch From the Jewish Women’s Archive: Benvenida Abravanel, from the famous Abrabanel family of Spain, was well educated in both Jewish and secular subjects. As a result of the Spanish Expulsion of 1492, the Abrabanel family immigrated to Naples where Benvenida became tutor to Eleonora, the daughter of the Spanish viceroy. The two women maintained a close relationship long after Eleonora had grown and married the Grand Duke of Tuscany. Benvenida, along with her daughters, was also a generous patron, contributing money for the printing of books and the support of scholars. Among those who benefited from her patronage was the pseudo-messiah David Reuveni (d. 1538?).</image:caption>

<image:caption>Plate and text by Adina Gerver Born: July 22, 1849 in New York City, NY Died: November 19, 1887, in New York City, NY Emma Lazarus was an American, Jewish, Sephardic author of poetry, prose, and translations, as well as an activist. She wrote the sonnet “The New Colossus” in 1883, to raise money for the construction of a pedestal for the Statue of Liberty. It is inscribed on a bronze plaque on the pedestal of the Satutue of Liberty, installed in 1903, a decade and a half after Lazarus’s death. ”One of the first successful Jewish American authors, Lazarus was part of the late nineteenth century New York literary elite and was recognized in her day as an important American poet. In her later years, she wrote bold, powerful poetry and essays protesting the rise of antisemitism and arguing for Russian immigrants' rights. She called on Jews to unite and create a homeland in Palestine before the title Zionist had even been coined.” From the Jewish Women’s Archive</image:caption>

      <image:title>Dinner Party - Vera Cooper Rubin</image:title>
<image:caption>Plate and text by Jen Anolik Vera Cooper Rubin discovered at a young age that women science students were not accepted at some universities. But that did not stop her from finding universities that accepted her. Her controversial master’s thesis for Cornell University (1951) examined the possibility of a bulk rotation for the universe. Her later doctorate and post doc into the rotation of matter in spiral galaxies provided some of the first direct evidence for the existence of dark matter. Remembering what it was like to be a lone woman staring at galaxies, Rubin considered it a responsibility and a privilege to be a mentor. “It is well known,” she said, “that I am available twenty-four hours a day to women astronomers.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Dinner Party - Lynne Landsberg</image:title>
<image:caption>Plate by Alex Richler, text from the Jewish Women’s Archive Lynne Landsberg had focused her rabbinic career on fighting for social justice, but when a car accident left her disabled, that fight became far more personal. Landsberg earned a master’s degree in theology from Harvard Divinity School in 1976 and was ordained by Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion in 1981. Seven years later, after serving as a congregational rabbi in New York and Virginia, she became associate director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism in Washington, DC, where she crafted social justice initiatives for reproductive rights and race relations. In 1996 she began working as regional director for the mid-Atlantic region of the Union for Reform Judaism. In 1999, after a car accident left her with a traumatic brain injury, she returned to the Religious Action Center, where she became senior advisor on disability rights, ensuring that communities not only provide physical access to buildings and resources for deaf, blind, or cognitively impaired congregants, but also actively welcome disabled members. Landsberg also served as founder and co-chair of the Central Conference of American Rabbis’ committee on disability awareness and inclusion, and co-founded the cross-denominational organization Hineinu: Jewish Community for People of All Abilities. Landsberg died of cancer on February 26, 2018.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Dinner Party - Dr. Joy Ladin</image:title>
<image:caption>Plate and text by Sarah Robinson Dr. Joy Laden, my college professor, is an accomplished author, poet, and theologian. She began her transition after being awarded tenure, but was then put on leave. After an 18 month legal battle with tremendous student support, Dr Ladin was welcomed back to the university, thus becoming the first openly trans teacher in an Orthodox institution. Her memoir entitled, "Through the Door of Life: A Jewish Journey Between Genders" explored the complexities of her transition; it was a brutally honest, raw, and beautiful tale about self-identity and expression. She's produced trans-torah in lectures like "The Soul of the Stranger: Reading God and Torah from a Transgender Perspective," where she shows how the absence of trans people from texts impresses an urgency on allies to support outsiders who are so far outside that the text didn't even recall them. Dr. Ladin showed me how to live your truth and to channel it through the best version of yourself.</image:caption>
